Ghost Pipe

AKA Indian pipe, Ice-plant, Bird's nest, Fit-plant, Ova-ova, Pipe-plant, Ghost-flower, and Corpse-plant

Originally classified into the family Monotropaceae, but after further research was reclassified to be included in the Ericaceae family.

The wild growing Ghost Pipe plant has been compared to frozen jelly, and will actually "melt" at the touch of a hand, hence its being called ice-plant. It is translucent and lacking of any color; it does not photosynthesise its own food as other plants do.

Ghost pipe root comforts as a tonic, sedative, nervine, and antispasmodic.

It can be actionable in less common fever ailments, as a sedative, and diaphoretic.

It can be of support to the body in instances of restlessness, discomfort, excited irritability, etc., without any unfavorable influences.

It is reputed to have soothed remittent and intermittent fevers, and ease recurrence.

It has also been employed in cases of acute anxiety and/or emotional/mental unbalance due to intense drug experiences.

It has been used effectively in treating severe mental and emotional pain due to PTSD and other traumatic injury, as well as severe nerve pain due to complications from particular tick bites. {homeopathyschool.com}

An old Cherokee legend states: Long ago, when selfishness first entered the world, people began quarreling, first with their own families and tribal members, and then with other tribes. The chiefs of the several tribes met together to try to solve the problem of quarreling. They enjoyed a peace pipe together, while continuing to quarrel among themselves for the next seven days and seven nights. In punishment for smoking the peace pipe before actually making peace, the Great Spirit turned the chiefs into grey flowers and made them grow where relatives and friends had quarreled.

"Imagine drifting in a tube. You are flowing freely without resistance. The direction of travel is set. There is nothing to resist, just to relax and go with the flow. This state of connectedness is so perfect that neither fear nor anxiety arise." -Lindsey Sameulson

These were responsibly harvested, leaving an ample supply to regrow the following season, and tincted immediately, on site. This results in a beautiful purplish tincture,

Resembling a spine and a brain-stem, Ghost Pipe is a unique ally in helping humans modulate sensory input. A tincture of the whole plant is comforting for those with physical discomfort.

David Winston accounts, “When I started using it 35 years ago I noticed quickly that it is not your normal analgesic. In fact I often say that it seemed more like getting Nitrous Oxide at the dentist than an analgesic, you know that it hurts, but simply don't care. The term that is used for this is antinociceptive, which means something that reduces sensitivity to painful stimuli. So Monotropa is primarily an antinociceptive, it raises the pain threshold.”

Ghost pipe eases discomfort from migraines and nerve inflammation, as well as emotional discomfort.

Described by those turning to Ghost Pipe for soothing emotional pain ---it was as though everything he/she was upset about was taken out and put beside him/her where he/she could see it and work with it. Oddly, this is almost identical to the way that Ghost Pipe works with physical discomfort.

Ghost pipe is helpful for acute anxiety and panic attacks, marked by emotional or sensory overload.
