"I went to the toad that lies under the wall,
I charmed him out, and he came at my call.”
Masque, of Queens,” BEN JONSON

Fairy tales and lore have linked Witches and Toads since at least the 1600’s. The Toad was the original Witch’s imp, said to have suckled on the Witch’s blood as reward for performing her malevolent deeds. The Witch could then utilize the Toad’s power to torment women, curse men, and to strengthen her own seer skills.

Oftentimes, because of their use in Flying Ointments, Toads are linked to the spiritual world & the underworld. Spells utilized Toad for protection, healing, & cursing.

Toad also has a long history as an ingredient in Witch’s Flying Ointments, and as an amulet, lending its power to the Witch. The Toadstone, or Bufonite, Amulet was thought to be capable of curing any poison.

Toadstones were thought to be “jewels cut from the brain of a toad” (Balthazar’s Daughter) It was said that these stones would become hot upon detection of any poison, therefore protecting the bearer against poisoning.

In medieval & later times, toads were regarded as satanic creatures. Witches were believed to be able to disguise themselves as toads. Toads also were familiars, housing Demons who were assigned by the Devil to be servants to witches. Witches were said to send their toad familiars out to poison others & cause mishaps & mayhem. Toads also accompanied them to Sabbats.

Modern day Witches consider toads good familiars, noting that the creatures are intelligent, easy to tame & easy to care for. They also are said to have psychic qualities. (The Encyclopedia of Witches, Witchcraft and Wicca)

Today, we know the much-sought after “jewels” were in fact fossilized teeth of an ancient fish, called lepidotes. Toad Stones were reported to hold mystical properties as early as the first century. They are still carried or worn as a good luck charm, and some still believe it to be an antidote to poison.

The antidote potion requires a Toadstone, which the witch carries in her pocket or on her person, such as an amulet, talisman, or a spirit vessel, such as a piece of jewelry.

As one can imagine, these pieces are quite rare & difficult to find. I was lucky enough to personally source a very limited number of stones from an ethical, reliable source. I have set this ring into a Sterling silver band with a delicate flower & leaf motif in the crown style top of the setting itself. The setting is 10mm, and I have sizes 5.5 through 8. Please specify size in seller notes upon checkout. I will be setting the other stones, and offering them very soon. This is a OOAK piece.
