Known by the ancient Egyptians as the Sacred Lily of the Nile, Blue Lotus is highly regarded for its euphoric, relaxant, and sedative effects.
Blue Lotus has a history of use as a ceremonial herb, regarded as a religious sacrament, believed to permit humans to achieve higher levels of consciousness. The flowers were steeped in spirits or wine, then consumed during ritual in an effort to induce feelings of peace, and convene with the Gods. Its growth pattern was seen as a metaphor for rebirth. Buddhists see the Blue Lotus flower as a symbol of spiritual victory.

Used in rituals, the Blue Lotus is linked to the afterlife and rebirth; King Tut's mummy is covered with these flowers, representing a reawakened and enlightened consciousness of the dead.
The lotus was considered the divine, all-seeing eye, in the battle of Horus and Seth. It is said that after Seth rips Horus' eyes from his head and buries them beneath the sand, they were transformed into lotus flowers.
It is also believed that Blue Lotus was used by an elite priesthood to experience a shaman ecstasy (Journal of Drugs 21). The God of the mystery cult, Osiris, is most often associated with the symbol of the Blue Lotus flower.
